AFM soldiers get two ‘yeses’ at Dublin Castle, Ireland

Two Maltese officer-cadets had a lovely surprise in store for their significant others during their commissioning ceremony in Ireland.

The class of 2019/20 included six Maltese recruits who had trained at the Cadet School in the Curragh. But this year’s class got more than they bargained for when Second Lieutenant Neil Spiteri and Second Lieutenant Aaron Zammit  devised a plan to propose to their girlfriends on this special day.

Fortunately, both, now fiancees, Nadesh Barbara and Amy Zammit, said yes, and both were in tears at the end of it.

“We thought about it two months ago and we said, ‘why not?’ I’ve been with Nadesh now for eight years so it was time,” Second Lieutenant Spiteri told the Irish Times.

The happy couples should be heading back to Malta this week, after completing the 15-month cadet course.

Lieutenant Spiteri told the Irish Times that “training outdoors in a wet and cold county like Ireland when you come from a sunny Mediterranean island like Malta.”

Well Neil, sunny Malta will be happy to see you back home. Well done to the Maltese recruits for this amazing achievement!
