AFM helicopter rescues ‘man in distress’ in Zurrieq

A man has been airlifted to hospital following a dramatic helicopter rescue by the Armed Forces of Malta.

The 40-year-old Briton was swimming off Wied iz-Zurrieq during stormy weather when he found himself in trouble.

The emergency services were alerted at around 3.45pm on Monday afternoon.

A spokesman for the Armed Forces of Malta told 89.7 Bay: ‘We successfully rescued a 40-year old British man who found himself in difficulty at Wied iz-Zurrieq.

‘An AW139 helicopter was dispatched to the area and winched the casualty to safety.

‘He was then transferred to the AFM’s Air Wing Base and subsequently taken to Mater Dei Hospital by an ambulance.’
