89.7 Bay duo complete 28-hour live radio marathon

They did it!

89.7 Bay presenters Daniel and Ylenia have completed an impressive 28-hour radio marathon to help raise money for a great cause.

The special show started at 6.30am on Friday morning, with the duo broadcasting non-stop all day and all night until Saturday morning at 10am.

The show featured competitions, music and lots of special guests including singers Gaia Cauchi, Maxine Pace, Alex Alden, Nicole Frendo, Charlene, Brooke as well as members of Malta’s two top bands Red Electrick and The Travellers and DJ legend J Joy.

Xarabank presenter Mark Laurence, and Andrea and Joseph from the television adventure show Liquorish, also dropped in to the Bay studios in St Julian’s to lend their support, as well as X Factor judges Howard Keith Debono, Ira Losco and members of the Malta Tourism Authority events team.

It was Daniel and Ylenia’s first charity marathon show since they launched Bay Breakfast in 2017.

Daniel was hilariously pranked after having his beloved mini car wrapped with photos of Ylenia, before Daniel got his own back on Ylenia in the studio.

The show on 89.7 Bay was part of the fundraising effort for the Terry Time Trust.

The trust hopes to raise €500,000 to help fund radio personality Terry Farrugia’s cancer treatment.

Mr Farrugia, who previously worked at 89.7 Bay, suffers from Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and has relapsed three times since he was first diagnosed around three years ago.

During the marathon, officials from the Terry Time Trust reached out to Daniel and Ylenia and thanked them along with the radio station’s directors and management for the fundraising effort.

Bay’s general manger Andrew Zammit said: ‘I am immensely proud of Daniel and Ylenia.

‘They did a fantastic job for 28 hours, managing to keep audiences tuned in day and night.

‘Though visibly exhausted they, maintained the highest standards of broadcasting throughout the marathon.

‘Similarly, the marathon would not have been possible without a whole crew of people whom the public have not heard on the air or seen on the live stream. They too were instrumental.

‘It was a privilege to work alongside such talented professional people.’
