Support swells for family of dad who ‘loved Malta’

A fundraising appeal has been launched for the father-of-two killed during Carnival weekend in Malta.

Dan Udrea, 38, tragically died when a tree crashed on top his car during stormy weather in Mriehel.

The father-of-two and his wife Irina, 32, were heading to work on Notabile Road when the accident happened on Saturday morning.

The couple had moved to Malta seven years ago from Romania in search of a better life.

Dan’s brother-in-law Sergiy Zarubin told 89.7 Bay: ‘They had two beautiful sons, Edy who is three years old, and Oli who is only six months.

‘They were planning to buy an apartment and settle in Malta for good. They loved Malta.

‘They finally found the place they were happy. ‘

Meanwhile, Mrs Udrea is said to be in a critical condition in Mater Dei Hospital, suffering from a serious skull injury following the freak accident.

Casualty staff at Mater Dei Hospital have started collecting funds so that Mr Udrea’s body can be flown back to his home country for burial close to his family.

Hospital chief executive Ivan Falzon announced details of the appeal on social media.

A fundraising page has also been set up on Go Fund Me by the Romanian’s friends in Malta.

One man who knew Mr Udrea well, Noel Debono, wrote on Facebook: ‘Too sad to be true.

‘Dan always worked hard, working long hours, always with a smile and was a very educated person.

‘These parents have a seven-month baby and I can’t find words to describe the sadness I feel now.

‘This man will be severely missed. Goodbye my friend!’
